Why Your Home-Service Website Should Load in Under a Second

Most contractor websites take four to eight seconds to load on a phone. Here's what that costs you in calls, why it happens, and the one architectural choice that fixes it for good.

Open your website on your phone, on cellular, not Wi-Fi. Count. If you got past "two" before you could read the headline, you're losing calls you'll never know about.

What slow actually costs

Google's own data has been consistent for years: the probability a mobile visitor bounces climbs steeply with every second of load time. For a home-service site the math is brutal, because the visitor usually has a problem right now. A homeowner with water coming through the ceiling isn't going to wait six seconds for a hero slider. They hit back and tap the next result, which is your competitor.

Speed is also a ranking factor, and a bigger one on mobile, which is where most "plumber near me" searches happen. A slow site ranks lower, so fewer people even get the chance to bounce off it.

Why contractor sites are slow

Almost always the same three things. A page builder that loads half a megabyte of JavaScript before it draws anything. Images uploaded straight from a phone at 4,000 pixels wide. And shared hosting that's serving two hundred other sites from the same box.

None of these are fixed by "optimizing." They're fixed by not doing them in the first place.

The fix: static pages

The fastest website is one that doesn't have to think. A static site is pre-built: every page already exists as a finished file, and the server just hands it over. No database query, no PHP, no plugin chain. On a modern CDN or a well-run server, that's a page in a few hundred milliseconds anywhere in the country.

That's how every Natural Media site is built. No WordPress to update, nothing to hack, and PageSpeed scores in the high 90s without anyone babysitting them. Pair it with images sized for the screen they'll be shown on and a stylesheet measured in kilobytes, and a 25-page site loads faster than most competitors' home page.

Check yours

Run your site through Google's PageSpeed Insights and look at the mobile score. If it's under 70, you're paying for traffic you're not converting. If it's under 50, it's worth a conversation about replacing the site rather than patching it.
