The One Number Most Contractors Can't Tell You

Ask an owner how many calls their website produced last month and you'll usually get a shrug. Call tracking answers that question for good, and changes how you spend on marketing.

Here is a question that stumps most home-service owners: how many of last month's calls came from your website?

Not "how many visitors." Not "how many form submissions." Calls, which are where the real jobs come from. If the honest answer is "no idea," you can't tell whether your website is worth what you pay for it, and neither can anyone selling you marketing.

How call tracking works

You put a different phone number on the website than the one on your trucks. That number forwards to your normal office line instantly, so callers never notice. But every call that comes through it is logged: time, caller ID, duration, and, with the right setup, a recording and a transcript.

Now the question has an answer. Forty-one calls from the website last month. Twenty-six were new customers. Nine booked. You know what the site is worth, to the dollar.

What changes once you know

A few things, in our experience.

You stop guessing which marketing works. If the website number rings 41 times and the Yellow Pages number rings twice, the next budget decision makes itself.

You find out what callers actually want. Transcripts show you the words customers use, which is gold for the next service page or blog post. They also show you how your office answers the phone, which is sometimes a harder lesson.

You catch the leads that fall through. A missed call at 4:55 on Friday shows up in the log Monday morning with the caller's number. Without tracking, it never existed.

The objection

"Won't a different number confuse Google?" Only if you do it wrong. The tracking number goes on the website. Your main number stays on your Google Business Profile, your trucks and your invoices, so your name-address-phone data stays consistent everywhere it's published. Done this way, tracking has no effect on local rankings.

Where to start

Every Natural Media site includes a tracking number with recording and transcription, and the Growth and Works plans add a dashboard where you can listen to calls and mark leads won or lost. If you'd rather set it up yourself, services like CallRail do the same job for about $45 a month. Either way, get the number. It's the difference between marketing and hoping.
